Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
During the fall season, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often defined by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who found the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family go about their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to evolve comedy past its prevailing layer of irony. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to enjoy the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
