Far-Right Ex- Legislator J.A. Kast Voted In as Chile's Incoming President.
In a decisive runoff election, far-right politician José Antonio Kast has secured the presidential office in Chile.
A Commanding Victory
With more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast secured 58.17% of the ballots, beating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having earlier been lost by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Platform Centered On Security and Migration
Known for his strong Catholic views and praise for the rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was primarily built on promises to address rising crime and drastically reduce immigration.
He consistently blamed foreigners, notably the roughly 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for security issues. Throughout the campaign, he gave an ultimatum for them to leave before the inauguration or face deportation.
His plans envisioned Trump-inspired measures such as erecting camps, barriers, security fences, and strengthening the military presence on the northern frontier.
Within a Broader Shift
Several observers see Kast's victory as aligning with a broader rightward trend in South America, similar to this year's political outcomes in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
However, other pundits also frame it as a part of the predictable alternation of power between left and right-wing administrations since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.
Governing Lacking a Strong Majority
Despite his decisive electoral win, Kast is not expected to have an overall majority in Congress, not in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even when various conservative parties are combined together.
This political reality could challenge his agenda, such as a vow to cut public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a plan for which he has not provided concrete steps.
"There are numerous things about what a Kast government will look like that remain unclear because he has not explained the way he will do them," commented a political analyst.
The analyst added, "In terms of the economy, it is very likely we will see adjustment measures typical of the right-wing. However the area with considerably less ambiguity is on security policy, because that has been his flagship issue throughout the race."
