The Contents of the Case Henry Unlocks in Stranger Things?
For much of season 5 of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive within a psychic prison built from the recollections of the villain Henry. Their quest for freedom in the pivotal sixth episode has them relive a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—a discovery that potentially carries the means to overcome him permanently.

A Journey Into the Tunnel
When she finds Max in the world known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a chamber that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a telescope found in Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies beyond the cave. Matching her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.
They watch a child version of Henry encounter an injured and paranoid man. When Henry tries to help, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the event wasn't just a defensive killing.
Like many elements of the final season, the full story behind the encounter originates in the live show Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research
The play reveals the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a warship into a realm known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who came back in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.
The captain's son, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to hand over to the Communist spies, who were keen to start their own interdimensional projects. That traitor in the tunnel is that employee.
The Briefcase's Contents
Based on what is known about the doctor's experiments, the case most likely held vials of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, leading to the awakening of his powers—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the kids in Hawkins Lab.
Alternatively, the container could have held dark matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. The stage play explains that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning after half a day as a different person. As a youth, he fights the control of a malevolent force, much like how the character Will was influenced by the Mind Flayer in the past.
The Power of Fear
The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine highlights how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. While he controls the Hive Mind and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has overcome his greatest terrors to gain strength.
Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a decisive edge in the endgame conflict to come.
