The English golfer Clinches the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional nerve to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic playoff after a rollercoaster last day of play.
The Englishman nailed a decisive birdie from around eight foot to clinch the win, echoing his sole prior Rolex Series triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off win over the same opponent.
Final Round Drama
The champion entered the final round with a single stroke lead over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, five-under closing round that included seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
Fleetwood moved a stroke ahead with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but Rai pulled level again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the final hole.
Play-Off Decider
This led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner triumphed to take the title and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a world-class player and an even more person. To compete alongside him the last two days was truly memorable,” stated Rai, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on playing the round and maintaining focus, it’s difficult to describe at the present how it is. It is incredible to be stood here.”
Notable Contenders

Højgaard carded six birdies of his as well, but his chances of leading the standings were dented by a dropped shot on the twelfth. England’s Richard Mansell hit an superb last round seven-under to finish tied for fifth with Australian Hillier.
